Foreign workers are a key component of Canada’s labour force, and they could be the right fit for your business. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is hosting a series of virtual sessions in June to help businesses in Western Canada learn about Canada’s immigration programs.
Canada’s population growth has largely been driven by immigration over the past 30 years, especially in light of our country’s declining birth rate. In Cowichan, deaths already outnumber births, and inward migration is now the main source of regional population growth. Immigration also has a strong impact on the age composition of our population, which impacts the labour force. While the mean age of Cowichan residents is 50.8 years old – approaching retirement age – the most typical age of immigrants to our region is just 28 years old. This flow of younger, working-age people to the region plays a significant role in supplying the labour market. A 2019 report on long-range projections for the region provides more information on the topic.
Foreign workers are persons who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, who are employed or seeking employment in Canada. Some are just looking for temporary work while they explore our country or complete their education, while others may be seeking permanent residency. Learn about federal immigration programs, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, with IRCC’s series of free, 30-minute information sessions for employers in Western Canada. You’ll learn about Canada’s economic immigration programs and resources to help you attract, hire and retain global talent.
