The jobs and livelihoods of 1,500 British Columbia forestry workers are being secured by Paper Excellence Canada’s (PEC) acquisition of Catalyst Paper’s facilities in Crofton, Port Alberni and Powell River.
The purchase by PEC – which is subject to regulatory review and final approvals – comes after months of joint effort by the B.C. government, Catalyst Paper and potential purchasers to maintain the viability of the company’s operations.
Catalyst Paper manufactures 1.3 million tonnes of pulp and paper products. These products include industrial packaging, food service, coated ground-wood, newsprint and directory papers. Customers include retailers, publishers and commercial printers in North America, Latin America, the Pacific Rim and Europe.
Its combined operations in B.C. generate over $2 billion in annual economic activity and are key contributors to the local economies of Vancouver Island, Powell River and Metro Vancouver.
