On Friday September 21, 2018 Economic Development Cowichan brought together local planners, financial institutions and funding agencies, developers and designers, and non-profit organizations for a workshop called – Creating Housing in Cowichan: From Ideas to Action. The event continued the conversation from the March, Missing Middle workshop, and explored the ways in which we can work collaboratively to move the dial on attainable housing projects.

The event featured presentations to an acclaimed panel of “friendly dragons” from four local community groups that are in the midst of developing a housing project. The dragons’ den panelists offered their professional insights to help move the projects from the conception stage to completion. The dragons’ were comprised of regional housing advisors and Avi Friedman, a nationally acclaimed architect and housing expert.

The evening prior to the event, Thursday September 20, 2018 Avi Friedman provided inspirational remarks showcasing the innovative design concepts he and his team have developed for the Cowichan region, as part of the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s ongoing Placemaking Vancouver Island Speaker Series.

The engaging and inspiring two days brought awareness to local projects, facilitated valuable connections and provided input for the Attainable Housing Strategy currently in development.
