What is the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program?

Funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program provides wage subsidies to eligible employers across Canada to hire recent post-secondary graduates for full-time internships lasting 6 to 12 months in the environmental science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) sectors.

Benefits for Employers

  • Wage Subsidy: Receive up to 80% of an intern’s salary, to a maximum of $25,000.
  • Additional Funding: Access up to $5,000 for training, skills development, and wrap-around services.

Eligibility Criteria

Employers must provide a new, full-time, permanent position related to environmental STEM, and be one of:

  • Canadian-owned or a Canadian subsidiary.
  • Municipal, provincial, or territorial government departments.
  • Indigenous organizations.
  • Providing a new, full-time, permanent position related to environmental STEM

Interns must:

  • Be aged 15 to 30 at the start of the internship.
  • Be post-secondary graduates.
  • Hold Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or have been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits during the internship.
  • Not be currently enrolled in school.
  • Priority is given to youth with barriers, including Indigenous youth, racialized youth (visible minority), youth with disabilities, official language minority, Northern/Rural/ Remote youth, 2SLGBTQI+ youth, and women.
